That title to this post is the most frustrating thing to me right now. I used to go to my local little town, walk around Joann’s and then maybe go for a fun bite to eat with my honey. It was a fun little habit that has now fallen flat on its face thanks to Joann’s defunct status.
What in the world am I supposed to do now?
Where can I wander through a store and “pet” the fabric?!
I know I am not the only one grieving the loss of Joann’s. I know. My friends, I am grieving with you.
Now what? I get that there are online stores. Yay! But, how can I pet the fabric and peruse the store and SMELL the linen?!
Apparently, I am going to have to adapt.
I’ve started poking around online, trying to find my new favorite fabric haunts. And there are some really interesting ones! The trouble is that shopping for fabric online feels completely different. A photograph can show me a print, but it can’t tell me how the fabric feels in my hand. Is it soft? Is it stiff? Is that blue really that blue? Is it going to behave itself when I sew it, or am I about to spend $14.99 a yard on something that feels like a picnic tablecloth?
And then there is the wandering.
I miss the wandering.
I miss going in for one completely sensible thing and finding some ridiculous fabric I didn’t know existed five minutes earlier but suddenly couldn’t possibly live without.
Maybe that’s the part I haven’t figured out how to replace yet. The internet is very good at helping me find what I’m looking for. A fabric store was good at showing me what I wasn’t looking for.
So, fellow fabric petters, where are we going now? Because I refuse to believe our only future is squinting at little fabric swatches on an iPad and hoping for the best. 😂
